Overall, with professionals like this Lhasa and Everest Base Camp Tour is designed to make memories for a lifetime. Here are some of the major highlights of the combined tour to Lhasa and Everest Base Camp that make it special:

How does exploring Lhasa reveal Tibet’s unique aspects?

Also known as the “City of the Sun” or “Place of the Gods,” hosting Tibet’s significant cultural and historical monuments such as Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, and Barkhor Street, Lhasa is the capital city of Nepal. Located at an altitude of 3,650 m/11,975 ft above sea level, besides being the political heart of Tibet, it is also the spiritual and cultural center; hence, to be able to witness such a unique charm is a blessing in itself.

The majestic Potala Palace is the seat of the Dalai Lama, while the Jokhang Temple, one of the most sacred Buddhist shrines, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that receives thousands of pilgrims each year. In the street of Barkhor, time seems to have stopped, and in the lap of the Himalayas, serenity is guaranteed, all resulting in the unique appeal of Lhasa to immerse in at least once in this trip to Lhasa and Everest Base Camp.

Which are the mountains that you can visit during the Forbidden Lhasa and Everest Base Camp Tour?

Yes, unlike many tours you may have been on, this tour to Lhasa and Everest Base Camp is not devoid of stunning mountain views. Especially specifically from the Everest Base Camp in Tibet, also called Rongbuk Base Camp, above Rongbuk Monastery at an altitude of 5,150 m above sea level, you will love the awe-inspiring mountain views bathed in snow from top to bottom.

Beside the mighty north face of Mount Everest, the highest mountain in the world, standing tall at an altitude of 8,848 m above sea level, on clear weather days travelers and visitors can witness the mythical mountain beauties such as Cho Oyu (8,188 m/the sixth-highest mountain in the world), Mount Shishapangma (8,027 m/the only mountain above 8,000 m in Tibet), and Lhotse in the distance.

Is the Lhasa and Everest Base Camp trip off the beaten track?

Once totally restricted for foreigners, naming it the forbidden gem, yes, traveling in Tibet and the Lhasa region, including to the Everest Base Camp, even today sees only a few visitors each year; hence, it remains largely unspoiled. Following the trails and routes paved by monks, explorers, and pilgrims, some even continuing to Kailash Mansarovar, experience raw landscapes blending seamlessly with abundant spiritual energy.

In comparison to the Nepal Golden Triangle Tour, Everest Base Camp Trek, and Annapurna Base Camp Trek in Nepal, the Lhasa and Everest Base Camp Tour in Tibet is less commercialized. In the trans-Himalayan region, offering scenery from the rugged Tibetan plateau and cliffs to lush valleys, the Lhasa and Everest Base Camp Trip is an extraordinary adventure.

Can you visit local villages during this forbidden Lhasa and Everest Base Camp Tour?

Yes, the journey to Lhasa and Everest Base Camp goes through several local Tibetan villages, such as Shigatse, Gyantse, Shalu, and Rombuk, including the city of Lhasa itself. These villages offer an insider's insight into traditional Tibetan life. Accompanied by an local experienced guide, observe the daily routines, beliefs, and hospitality of locals, ensuring you have an enhanced cultural depth and personal connection.

On rice, millet, and wheat fields, based on the season you are traveling, travelers and trekkers often can come across yak herders and yaks, spinning wheels, prayer flags, and daily rites and rituals performed in monasteries such as Rongbuk Monastery (5,009 m/16,434 ft) above sea level, one of the highest monasteries in the world. The strong influence of Buddhism is evident and admirable in that it prays for world peace and harmony.

Trip to Lhasa and Everest Base Camp: When does it get arduous?

Though the Forbidden Lhasa and Everest Base Camp Tour is overland and is manageable for a wide range of travelers, trekkers, and visitors, including beginners, children, and elderly members of the family, due to the high altitude, it can get challenging while crossing the high mountain passes and journeying to Everest Base Camp from Rongbuk Monastery (5,009 m/16,434 ft).

The challenges are balanced by equally stunning mountain views. To make it through the Karo La Pass (5,045 m), Kampa La Pass (5,050 m), and Pang La Pass (5,150 m) without the symptoms of acute mountain sickness (AMS), acclimatization is a must. Reaching Everest Base Camp, whether in Tibet or Nepal, should not be taken lightly, so it is good to be extra cautious.

    Useful Info

When is the best time for the Lhasa and Everest Tour?

Spring and autumn, offering pleasing and stable Himalayan weather, mild temperatures, and clear skies, are taken as ideal seasons for the Forbidden Lhasa and Everest Base Camp Trip. It is because of the low chances of rain and snow that the risk of natural disasters and flight cancellations is also minimal. The views are unobstructed, and several national festivals also take place in the months of spring and autumn.

From March to May is spring, when the forests come alive with a wide range of flora and fauna, as do the rivers, streams, and lakes. Autumn is from September to November and is known for longer days to enjoy the cultural, natural, and spiritual excursions to the fullest. Unlike in summer/monsoon and winter, when temperatures can get too hot or cold, spring and autumn strike just the right kind of environment for high-altitude treks, expeditions, and hikes.

How to prepare yourself for the combined trip to Lhasa and Everest Base Camp in Tibet?

Unlike high-altitude treks to Everest Base Camp in Nepal, the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, and the Manaslu Circuit Trek, though you may not need extensive training for a tour to Lhasa and Everest Base Camp in Tibet, it is wise to be aware of potential risks that arise with high-altitude journeys. To stay healthy, daily exercise is not to be skipped. Even before the tour starts, select the tour itinerary that allows proper acclimatization.

This is so you do not see symptoms of altitude sickness and slow down your journey. While you are on the tour, make sure you eat healthy and stay hydrated. Following your guide's advice is a must, and while packing, carry only those items needed and appropriate to the weather conditions. If necessary, do carry medications for altitude sickness.

Must you get permits and travel insurance for the Lhasa and Everest Base Camp Tour?

Yes, permits are mandatory, and although travel insurance for traveling to Lhasa and Everest Base Camp might not be, it allows economic security and peace of mind and hence is recommended. The country banned free individual trekkers way before; therefore, even to get permits, you will have to be accompanied by a registered tour guide and be part of a group. At Adventure Himalayan Travels and Treks, for your enhanced experience, we take care of all the permits, documents, and guides on booking with us.

While we suggest you buy comprehensive travel insurance from a local agent with high-altitude excursion coverage up to 4,000 m above sea level at least, with us, you are in reliable hands with more than two decades of experience in conducting and organizing tours in Nepal, Bhutan, and Tibet. If you are looking for extensive experience in these three neighboring Himalayan countries, check out the 18-day Nepal-Tibet-Bhutan Tour.

    • Forbidden Lhasa and Everest Base Camp - 9 Days

      rating

everything about this tour was more than we could have hoped for. From the moment we were met at Kathmandu airport by Mr. Rana we were completely taken care of. Our permit for Tibet was ready the three days later needed by the Chinese embassy in Kathmandu. We were transferred for our flight to Lhasa and met at hotel in KTM upon our overland return from Tibet. The tour of TIbet with driver and guide followed faithfully our itinerary, the highlight of course being an unobstructed sunrise of the north face of Everest. Our guide was very solicitous of us all the way, always being sure the altitude was OK for us. Both he and the driver were always on time, we travelled many kms. But not tiring. This was the trip of a lifetime, you indeed feel you are at the top on the world in these beautiful mountain valleys surrounded by unforgettable peaks. Unless you want to include Mount Kailish, this 9 day trip was the perfect amount of time, Staying in Lhasa for three nights helped the acclimatization to the altitude, although Everest Base Camp is a bit of a stretch. But the alternative to staying at a hotel two hours away outweighed the discomfort (we did not take diamox and were OK). Overland to Kathmandu from Tibetan border was an experience, but not to be missed. If I was to decide to do this over again, this would be the itinerary, and Adventure Himalayan Travels out of Kathmandu would be the agent. To start in Lhasa and end in KTM is much the best direction, you need to have a week to acclimatize to 5200 m. At Everest, plus the view is better from the north side. This tour rates 100% for organization, facilitation, and the kindness of the people of Kathmandu and Tibet
