Trip Overview

The Upper Mustang Trek is a journey into the rain shadow region of the Nepalese Himalayas, which stands out for its rare combination of untouched natural and cultural beauty, followed by historical intrigue. Which is the best Upper Mustang trekking route? The 17-day itinerary for trekking to Upper Mustang introduces you to the ancient Buddhist kingdom and its capital city, Lo Manthang, a fortified city positioned atop the Kali Gandaki River. Unlike other lush green trekking trails in Nepal, the trek to Upper Mustang is through the rain shadow areas and includes a full exploration of Lo Manthang.

Resulting in minimal rainfall and dry topography throughout the year in the restricted area of Nepal, the Upper Mustang Trekking Trail is a fantastic monsoon trek alternative. Though the overall Upper Mustang Trek cost, including for the years 2025 and 2026, can be slightly higher than other normal treks in Nepal, it is worth investing in. The unveiling of diverse terrain, traversing the world’s deepest gorge in the Kali Gandaki to the world’s highest regions of Lo-Manthang, kept completely hidden from foreigners until 1992. The experience is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Tie your trekking boots for an epic Himalayan Odyssey in Nepal. Pass through native tribes of Lobos, enjoy 180-degree views of the Nilgiri, Annapurna, and Dhaulagiri ranges while you walk through the land guarded by more than 35 mountain peaks above 6,000m. What to expect during a trek to Upper Mustang in Nepal?

The Upper Mustang Trek anticipates basic food, accommodation, and other amenities on the journey to enter the forbidden kingdom of Nepal, Lo Manthang. While the scenery as you make your way from Jomsom to your primary destination, Lo Manthang, makes up for all the ups and downs, such as dusty roadways, rugged terrain, and steep ascents and descents, keeping oneself optimistic and having realistic expectations is a must. Every day, you will walk for 5-7 hours, each day presenting you with something unique to appreciate.

The windswept desert valleys, dramatic rock formations, and man-made caves, all set against the intriguing backdrop of snow-clad mountain giants like Nilgiri and Annapurna, keep you inspired and motivated. As you ascend higher, the low presence of oxygen, dry air, and strong winds can add to the challenges, but are balanced by the region’s abundance of unspoiled culture, history, nature, warm hospitality, and spiritual ambiance. For someone seeking solitude and adventure away from crowds, Upper Mustang Valley Hiking, unfolding the interesting lifestyle of local Tibetan and Thakali communities, is a dream-come-true trip.

Which are the mountains that are visible during the trek to Upper Mustang in Nepal?

During the trekking journey to Upper Mustang, trekkers can see several iconic peaks. As soon as you reach the trek starting point, Jomsom, you will be welcomed by the majestic seventh-highest mountain in the world, Mount Dhaulagiri (8,167m). From Kagbeni, Chhusang, and Chele, you will be treated to panoramic views of Nilgiri (7,061 m / 23,166 ft) and Annapurna I (8,091 m / 26,545 ft), other than Dhaulagiri, while Tukuche Peak (6,920 m / 22,703 ft) opens up as you ascend higher and higher.

Though the Upper Mustang Trek itself does not go extremely high, as you move closer and closer to Lo Manthang, the major highlight of the trip, the open skies and high-altitude desert terrain provide unobstructed sight of Thorong Peak, Tilicho Peak, Yakwakang, and Saribung Peak. Along the route, you can capture the snow-capped giants rising above the lush Kali Gandaki Valley and barren desert-like cliffs of Mustang, all resulting in a contrasting yet visually astounding mountain scenery to remember for a lifetime.

Is the landscape of the Upper Mustang different from that of other trekking regions of Nepal?

Yes, in comparison to several world-famous high-altitude treks in Nepal, such as the Everest Base Camp Trek, the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, and the Langtang Valley Trek, the Upper Mustang Trek offers you a completely different landscape. Along the Upper Mustang Trek Trail in the rain shadow area of Nepal, instead of lush green valleys, hills, and dense forests like those during other Himalayan trekking routes, trekkers are treated to mostly high-altitude desert-like landscapes.

The dramatic display of red cliffs, deep canyons, windswept plateaus, and arid terrain similar to that in Tibet captivates the hearts of trekkers. Manmade and natural caves, cliff-side monasteries, and sparse vegetation are yet another highlight of the trek to Upper Mustang, while the Himalayan giants like Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, and Nilgiri, set against the barren landscape, make you wonder, How is this even possible?

Why is the culture of the Upper Mustang unforgettable?

The Upper Mustang trekking region in Nepal is a living museum of Tibetan Buddhist culture. It's centuries of isolation now mean the culture here is still unspoiled, carrying the legacy of ancestors that only a few get to witness. This particular trekking region features traditional stone-roofed houses, Buddhist monasteries, chortens, Mani walls, and prayer flags, letting its visitors get a taste of its deep-rooted Tibetan influence.

Delve into the typical Tibetan customs, dress, language, and beliefs of the place known as “Himal Pari ko Desh” (a kingdom behind mountains). The centuries-old palaces, specifically in Lo Manthang; monasteries like Thubchen, Jampa Lhakhang, and Tibetan medicine clinics; and villages like Kagbeni, Chhusang, Samar, and Ghami have seen only little changes over the years.

The genuine hospitality and simple lifestyle of Himalayan locals and a special insight into the way of living of Loba people add much to the cultural encounters and immersion. Yak caravans, mud houses, and the Tiji festival in Lo Manthang additionally enrich the cultural dimensions, making the trek to Upper Mustang more than mountains and unforgettable trekking experiences side-by-side.

How are ancient caves archaeological wonders?

The Upper Mustang Trekking area is home to several ancient caves, some of which were used as dwellings, meditative spots, or burial sites, preserving evidence of life and livelihood in the early days. As you take side trips here or pass through, the time seems to have stopped. Following the ancient trade route, as you visit Chhoser Cave near Lo Manthang, known for its intricate murals, religious artifacts, and wall paintings, you will gain deep insights into the evolution of human civilization.

Everything tells the story of a kingdom of Nepal that thrived in isolation, including the sky caves, which are archaeological wonders to explore during the Upper Mustang Hiking journey. Many believe these caves were also the meditation chambers of several Buddhist monks, and they are vivid with a serene ambience. Atop the valley, a bit away from human inhabitants and much farther from the city, if you are keen on yoga, meditation, and mindfulness, these caves along the Upper Mustang Trekking route are a paradise for you.

What makes the Upper Mustang Valley Trekking Trail an off-the-beaten-path trek?

One of the stunning trek destinations of Nepal, a must to add to your bucket list for 2025 and 2026, Upper Mustang, is among the few restricted areas of the country. It means the trekking region known as the hidden cultural gem allows only a limited number of trekkers each year. Even during the peak trekking and climbing season (spring and autumn), the area remains notably less trodden away from mass tourism.

The requirements of special permits, mandatory hiring of local guides, and at least a group of two trekkers, followed by comparatively not easier access from Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital city, to other popular trekking regions, keep this trail less traversed. Hence, the Upper Mustang Trek offers you a serene and authentic trekking experience.

It is a perfect escape for those seeking a more raw, spiritual, and isolated journey into the untouched Himalayan kingdoms. Contact us now to book your Upper Mustang trip or join our fixedly departing groups in spring and autumn of 2025 and 2026. Our comprehensive trekking package is so you can make the most of your journey while we take care of all the essential needs, including permits, guides, and other logistics.

Useful Info

Can you go for the Upper Mustang Valley Trek in the summer season in Nepal?

Yes, it is because the Upper Mustang Trek is in one of the rain shadow areas of Nepal that barely rains even during the rainy or summer seasons; it is, in fact, one of the best times to visit the region, other than spring and autumn. During winter (late November to February), since the temperature can go below the freezing point, it is not considered a good time to pursue the trekking trail to Upper Mustang Valley. All of these times of the year in the Upper Mustang Trekking region of Nepal feature moderate temperatures, clear skies, and excellent visibility. If you are more fond of the Tiji festival, consider coinciding your trip with May or early June.

What are food and accommodation like during the Upper Mustang Trip in Nepal?

Teahouses, lodges, and guest houses opened and managed by the Himalayan locals are the ones that provide you with daily meals and accommodation to rest. Along the Upper Mustang Trekking route, you will get to stay in basic yet comfortable teahouses that also offer you a standard Nepali menu with Tibetan and local-influenced dishes. Rooms are traditionally furnished and consist of twin-sharing beds with shared bathrooms. Expect basic bedding like mattresses, blankets, and pillows, followed by limited amenities such as Wi-Fi, charging devices, and hot showers.

Available at some additional cost in the lower region, as you ascend higher, it becomes rarer. Overall, the teahouse fulfills your basic needs so you can make it through your journey to Upper Mustang, and making realistic anticipations is key to happiness in such a remote land.

How difficult is the trek to Upper Mustang Trek? Is it suitable for beginners?

The Upper Mustang Hike that reaches the highest point in Lo Manthang at an elevation of 3,840m above sea level is regarded as moderate in difficulty. While there might not be any need for technical climbing skills, one must be prepared for long walking days, altitude gains, rugged and uneven terrain, and changing Himalayan weather conditions. One must be physically fit to push through some steep ascents and descents that can be difficult for those with knee, lung, and heart issues.

Otherwise, yes, beginners or seasoned trekkers, old or young, anyone with at least a month before physical and mental conditioning can complete the journey to one of the last unspoiled Himalayan trek destinations in Nepal, Upper Mustang. On the way, you must be well acclimatized, eat healthy, and ascend gradually to avoid altitude sickness and not have to abort the trip once it begins.

Do you need a special permit for trekking to Upper Mustang?

Yes, you will need one extra special permit called a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) to go for a trek to Upper Mustang so that you have access to the restricted area of Nepal where the trek lies. To obtain this permit, individuals must travel via one of the local registered travel and trekking companies, like Adventure Himalayan Travels and Trek, or at least be in the company of a local guide and be in a trek group with at least two members.

In addition to this, you will have to obtain an Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP) and a Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) card, which are also issued by the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) and Nepal Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN). On booking with us, we make all the necessary arrangements for you, including permits and guides, as part of a comprehensive trekking package for Upper Mustang.

Where can you hire local guides to go for Upper Mustang Hiking?

As per the Nepalese government regulations, you must hire a licensed guide and trek in a minimum group of two for the Upper Mustang Trek, and now the question arises, from where? Adventure Himalayan Travels and Treks is one of the leading travel, trek, and tour operators based in the heart of the Kathmandu Valley, Thamel, and is a team of high-altitude-trained guides, porters, and adventurers.
