Transportation in Nepal

There are a series of means of transportation available for you to choose in Nepal from:

Public Transportation

Many local buses, minibusses, microbuses, and three-wheelers are found in the valley for different destinations within the town. The Sajha Yatayat has resumed bus services along two routes in the valley that are currently operating along Kalanki, Kalimati, Tripureshwor, New Baneshwor, Sinamangal, and Airport, and along Satdobato, Jawalakhel, Tripureshwor, Jamal, Teaching Hospital, and Naya Bus Park.

The buses are precisely recognizable due to their green color and the name "Sajha Yatayat" on them. The bus stops only at designated bus stops; therefore, one has to identify the nearest Sajha bus stop to be able to board one.

Metered Taxi

Taxis are easily identifiable by their sign on the top with a black license plate. After consulting with the Kathmandu Valley Map to find the direction to your destination, hail a ‘Taxi’ that will charge Rs. 30 per kilometer. Private taxis may charge slightly higher. Yet they do not expect any tips.

Major hotels are capable of arranging and operating night taxi services as well, with a slightly higher fare than metered taxis. From a travel agent or car rental company, one can rent a private car in addition.

Hired Mountain Bike/ Ordinary Bicycle:

One of the best forms of transportation for economy tourists is mountain bikes and ordinary bicycles that are affordable in price and easily hireable from Thamel, Rani Pokhari, and Jhochhen, all in Kathmandu.

Long Distance Bus Service:

Long-distance, day, or night bus services are regulated from Kathmandu to all cities of Nepal from New Bus Park (Naya Bus Park) at Gonbgu, Ring Road near Balaju, departing for different destinations.

You will also get a six-seater sumo tata van, a 12-seater van, and air-conditioned minibusses for long-distance travel.

Domestic Air Service:

There are more than 18 airlines in operation providing regular and chartered services to popular domestic destinations in Nepal, among which Nepal Airlines has extensive air service networks to several major parts of the country.
