Trip Overview

The Manaslu Circuit Short Trek is a condensed version of one of Nepal’s classic and less-frequented Himalayan routes that encircles the eighth-highest mountain in the world, also famous as the killer mountain, Mount Manaslu (8,163 m). The 11-day Manaslu Circuit Short Trekking Itinerary is designed for adventurers who want to embrace all the highlights of the Manaslu Circuit Trek within a short timeframe.

In one of the highly restricted areas of the country that is still almost untouched by rapid urbanization, appreciate the unique landscape of the trans-Himalayan region that rarely observes frequent rainfall even during the monsoon/summer seasons. On this short Manaslu Himalayan trip, you will not miss any cultural, religious, or natural highlights, including crossing the longest high mountain pass in Nepal, Larkya La Pass (5,160 m).

In the pristine grace of Baudha, Gorkha, and Chuli Himal, even though the Manaslu Circuit Short Hiking is shorter in duration, you won’t have to compromise on the mind-blowing blend of high mountain scenery, well-preserved Buddhist culture, and far less commercialization than the Everest Base Camp Trek, the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, and short treks like the Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek.

What to expect during the short trek to Manaslu?

Typically starting from Maccha Khola, the Manaslu Circuit Short Trek is a fantastic option among the many trekking and climbing routes of Nepal for adventurers who want to test their endurance amidst the raw Himalayan wilderness. From lush forest to the Tibetan Plateau-like landscape dotted with Tibetan cultural villages, it is a golden opportunity to admire the rich heritage and unique diversity of land that was kept hidden for centuries.

Often listed on the trips as doable even by first-timers if you are not ready for long hours of walking, rugged terrain at some point, and exposure to snowy and icy areas, it is better to instead start with shorter treks at mid-altitude, like the Khopra Danda Trek or the Langtang Valley Trek near Kathmandu. To explore the part of the Great Himalayan Trail, the right fitness level and mind makeup are essential, and so is guidance from local operators.

How far is the Manaslu Trek?

To the northwest of the capital city of Nepal, Kathmandu, to begin the Manaslu Circuit Trek, be it the Manaslu Circuit Short Hike of 11 days, you will drive to Maccha Khola at first. Located about 160-170 km from Kathmandu, you reach the trailhead in about 8-10 hours and thereafter begin foot walking to cross the Larkya La Pass to encircle Mount Manaslu near the Tibetan border.

Once the journey begins from start to end, you will cover about 177 km/110 miles over 12 to 15 days, following the standard Manaslu Circuit Trekking itinerary for those who want to complete it faster than the other 11 to 12 days. You will cover 12-20 km per day on average, walking at least 6-8 hours a day. Either way, the Manaslu trekking in Nepal offers a rewarding journey filled with cultural exposure, diverse landscapes, and stunning Himalayan views.

Off the beaten route

Unlike the Annapurna, Everest, and Langtang trekking regions in Nepal, the Manaslu Trek region, with several classic cultural trek routes like the Nar Phu Valley Trek and Tsum Valley Trek, other than the Manaslu Circuit Trek, remains largely untouched by massive waves of tourism. Comparatively farther from popular and larger city areas like Pokhara and Kathmandu, its designation as one of the restricted areas means a real adventure awaits.

Most of the Manaslu hiking trails, even in the peak trekking and climbing seasons in Nepal, called spring and autumn, see a smaller number of tourists. The Manaslu Conservation Area it offers an ideal Himalayan escape for trekkers seeking solitude in the land that is isolated from modern hustle and bustle. Through dramatic river gorges, towering cliffs, and adventuresome suspension bridges.

Authentic cultural experience

The Manaslu Conservation Area, besides providing a natural habitat to a wide range of flora and fauna, is also home to diverse ethnic communities of Nepal. In lower and warmer areas, you come across Gurung and Tamang villages leading their simple lives, farming and grazing cattle. As you go further into high altitude in and around Larkya La Pass, Tibetans and Bhotia communities are the people you will encounter.

Life in here is highly guided by the spiritual and cultural beliefs, distinctive yet closely related to Tibetan Buddhism, as showcased by several monasteries, mani walls, chortens, and typical stone-roofed houses often decorated with colorful prayer flags. Stay in the teahouses opened by locals, enjoy the warm hospitality, share your travel experience, or hike to sacred Pungyen Gompa; an authentic cultural experience is a natural part of the trip.

The iconic Larkya La Pass

Popular as the ultimate Mount Manaslu viewpoint, Larkya La Pass is both the most challenging and rewarding phase of the circuit trek to Manaslu, including during the Manaslu Circuit Short Trip. Iconic, the longest high mountain pass in Nepal, at the center of the majestic Mount Manaslu, at an altitude of 5,160 m, 24 km/14.91 miles in distance from Dharamsala (Larkya Phedi) to Bimthang, it also provides you with incredible views.

Especially scenic during sunrise and sunset, when the first ray of sunlight slowly covers the snow-capped peaks and surroundings in the hues of gold, orange, and pink, starting from the summits, the sense of adventure and achievement fills you right there. A 360-degree sight of Manslu, Himlung Himal, Cheo Himal, Kanguru, Gyaji Kang, Ratna Chuli, Nemjung, and Pang Phychi Peak stretches as far as Tibet, a magical experience full of adrenaline.

Can you continue trekking to the Annapurna region?

Yes, the typical Manaslu trekking route often merges into another beautiful terrain of the largest conservation area of Nepal, the Annapurna Conservation Area. Those keen for a more diverse experience may later on continue hiking to complete the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, Annapurna Circuit Trek, or Tilicho Lake and Thorong La Pass Trek, right after descending from Larke Pass.

Useful Info

Why is the Manaslu Circuit a perfect summer alternative trek in Nepal?

Summer in Nepal, typically spanning from June to August in general, is considered one of the off times for high-altitude treks and climbs after winter. Since the Manaslu Circuit Trekking, whether short, mid, or longer, combined with another classic Annapurna Circuit Trek, is in the trans-Himalayan rain shadow area, it serves as one of the best summer alternative hiking journeys. Otherwise, winter is cold, icy, and snowy, making spring and autumn the best.

From March to May and September to November, the stable weather, mild temperature, and clear skies make spring and autumn the optimal times of the year for any sort of Himalayan journey, including the Manaslu Circuit Short Trek of 11 days. The lower region during spring is also characterized by fresh blooms of rhododendrons and wildflowers, and autumn for its festive vibe when Dashain and Tihar often coincide with it.

Food, accommodation, and drinking water on the Manaslu Trek Trail

The Manaslu Trek, which was once completely closed to foreigners, is now a teahouse-style Himalayan trip. That means along the Manaslu Trek route, including while going for the Manaslu Circuit Short Trekking of 11 days, you can find numerous teahouses, local lodges, and guest houses for you to stop by for meals, accommodation, and drinking water, as well as other amenities you could think of on the route.

The higher you go and enter into further remote land, the more limited your choices can get; therefore, it is advisable that you keep your expectations realistic on modern facilities like wifi, hot showers, private rooms, and electricity. At high altitude, these are things of luxury and almost non-existence. While lukewarm boiled drinking water is refillable at various stops, you wouldn’t have to worry about nutrients and a basic, comfortable place to rest.

Manaslu Circuit Short Trekking Difficulty Level

Reaching the maximum elevation gain at 5,106 m above sea level, the short trek to the Manaslu circuit is regarded as moderate to challenging in terms of difficulty. Though you will complete the round trip to Manaslu faster than following the standard Manaslu Circuit Trek itinerary, it compresses the daily walking hours, i.e., you are supposed to cover more distance in the same walking hours or in less time than usual.

The risk of altitude sickness is still there, as is that of unpredictable Himalayan weather that can vary from morning to afternoon and in the evening. Uphill and downhill walks are some of the common features of the Manaslu Trek trail and demand a good level of physical and mental preparation, especially when you are heading to a significant high-altitude landmark like Larkya La Pass. Proper preparation, packing, and acclimation are a must.

Things you can do to avoid altitude sickness

A common and major concern for everyone heading on the high-altitude Himalayan trekking journey, regardless of age, fitness level, and experience, is altitude sickness, also called acute mountain sickness (AMS), including during the short hiking journey to the Manaslu Circuit. While avoidable if acclimatized properly, it should not be taken lightly, especially once symptoms of it, like headache, nausea, and loss of appetite.

If not resolved in time, it can lead to fatal conditions like HACE and HAPE; therefore, the golden key is to hike up and sleep low to get used to low levels of oxygen, almost ⅓ of that at sea level. Maintain your pace, listen to your body, keep yourself hydrated, and eat healthy. The least you could do is choose an itinerary that allows ample time for acclimatization with buffer days. In case you are not confident, you can always extend the trip.

Why is hiring a guide and getting travel insurance a must?

Nepal banned free individual trekkers (FITs) strictly since April 1st, 2023; i.e., while one may choose not to be part of the trekking group, it is a must that you hire a professional guide, especially when you are planning to embark on the trekking route within one of the highly restricted areas like the Manaslu Circuit Trek. The special restricted area permit (RAP) is issued only when you are part of a group with at least two trekkers accompanied by a guide.

Well trained for high-altitude treks and climbs, including first aid, a licensed guide born and brought up in the Himalayas not only leads the way, navigating the tough terrain and keeping you aware of potential pros and cons, but also helps fill the cultural and linguistic gap between you and locals, while comprehensive high-altitude coverage travel insurance ensures you peace of mind and financial protection against any unforeseen circumstances.
