More Fact Less fact

This world famous trek takes us up to Everest Base Camp after passing through Namche Bazaar, Lukla, Tyangboche and the whole of Solukhumbu, which is nestled beneath Mount Everest and the majestic Ama Dablam (6812). The Everest Trek is one of the most thrilling adventure treks for excitement-seekers.

The Khumbu region, commonly known as the Everest Region, is the home of Mt. Everest (8848m), the highest mountain in the world.  Though, it is also home to the Sherpa ethnic group, famous for their remarkable hospitality and their cclimbing capabilities.  The famed Sherpa people, whose lives are interwoven with the teachings of Buddhism, and monuments of Tibetan Buddhism (prayer flags, mani walls, etc.) add much charm to the trail.  The allure of trekking in the Khumbu area does not come only from trekking and expeditions, but also from Sherpa culture. You will enjoy learning a lot about Sherpa culture while visiting this region.

This is the same trail as our "Everest Base Camp Trek," though slightly shortened for those who are on a time constraint, or have a faster walking pace than most. The trek begins with a hike from Jiri to Lukla. Flying to Lukla is the best option for visitors who have limited time. It is best to book your flight with a few days of leeway, as flights to and from Lukla can often be delayed depending on weather conditions. However, helicopter services and chartered flights are also available as per your request.

The vegetation at lower levels is dominated by silver fir, birch, rhododendron and juniper trees; at around 4500m the forest gives way to juniper, rhododendron, and other shrubs. The park contains a variety of mammals: the Himalayan thar, musk deer, the Himalayan red panda and the Himalayan black bear are all native to the park. The renowned Tengboche and other monasteries are common gathering places to celebrate religious festivals such as Dumje and Mane Rimdu. In addition to Tengboche, Thame, Khumjung and Pangboche are some other famous monasteries that you will come across on your travels in this region.

  • Day 02Fly From Kathmandu to Lukla (2886m) and Trek to Phakding (2640m On this day, you will fly from Kathmandu to Lukla (2886m.) which will take approximately 30 minutes and then you will trek from Lukla to Phakding (2640m.) which takes three hours. Lukla is a small town with an airport. There are few tea shops, lodges, hotels and general stores. You begin today’s trek from Lukla following a gentle climb up the mountainside on the left bank of the Dudh Koshi River. Nupla (5885m) can be seen in the distance on the opposite bank, is a peak atop the Kongde Ridge. You descend a mountainside path that merges into your route to Everest, with views to a valley to your right; and at its far end, Kusum Kang (6367m.) The Dudh Koshi approaches as you pass a Mani wall and arrive at Ghat teahouse. You continue along a small path with many climbs and descents following the left bank of Dudh Koshi to Phakding. Overnight in lodge.
  • Day 03Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3440m) On the fourth day, you will be trekking from Phakding to Namche Bazaar (3440 m.) which takes about five hours. You cross rivers on high suspension bridges. Beyond Monjo (2800m.) is the entrance to the Sagarmatha National Park which was set-up in order to protect and preserve this fragile mountain environment. You then ascend quite steeply to Namche and along the way, if the weather is clear, catch the first glimpse of Mt Everest in the distance. You can also enjoy the view of Mt. Kusum Kangaru, Thamserku, Konde-Ri and Tawache peak along the way. You can also visit some of the village monasteries on the way of trekking to Namche Bazaar (3440 m.). Namche is the main trading village in the Khumbu region and holds a busy Saturday market. Namche Bazaar is a fascinating place to explore. Overnight in a lodge.
  • Day 04Rest at Namche Bazaar for acclimatization Acclimatization is important before proceeding to a higher elevation. It is therefore recommended to take a short day's hike to Thami, Khunde, Khumjung or up to the Everest View Hotel so that we can see a clear view of Mount Everest. You can even relax and explore the culture of Sherpa in Namche. Overnight stay at a guesthouse.
  • Day 05 Namche Bazaar to Tengboche Monastery (3875m) The trek from Namche Bazaar to Tengboche takes about five hours. Leaving the village, you will climb to the top of a ridge onto a level mountain path that offers an excellent panorama of Thamserku, Kantega, and Kusum Kangrib. After a gentle descent, the mountain path ends; you will come to the fork leading to Gokyo. You descend past two tea houses through the village of Trashinga. It is a long climb to Tengboche. The first half is especially steep. As you trek through the forested zone, the incline eases to a panoramic view of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse and Ama Dablam appears. You continue climbing along the mountainside until you reach the stone gate, built by lamas, marking your entry into Tengboche (3860m). You spend the night at the lodge.
  • Day 06 Tengboche to Dingboche (4260m) In the morning we'll have spectacular views of the mountains and the monastery in Tengboche. We will spend most of the morning in the Imjatse Khola through the birches, conifers and Rhododendrons. By following the river to the north, the path goes through several walls chortens and prayer flags around the small villages. On the way you can have the best view of Ama Dablam. After arriving in Dingboche, you can enjoy the beautiful array of fields surrounded by stone walls aiming to protect Barley, Buckwheat, Potatoes. The view of Island Peak is beautiful from Dingboche. Overnight stay at a guesthouse.
  • Day 07Rest day at Dingboche (4260m) for acclimatization On the 8th day you will be climbing a bit and then descending, in order to acclimatize. You can go for a short walk of 400 meters, ascending Nangkartshang Gompa in the north of the range, Dingboche from Nangkartshang which offers good scenic view. To see Makalau (8463 m), alternatively, you can follow an epic trail along the Imja Khola to Chhukung which may be longer walk taking 4-5 hours. Overnight stay at a guesthouse.
  • Day 08 Dingboche to Lobuche (4930m) via Kongma La pass (5535m) We begin today’s trek very early in the morning to reach the highest part of the entire trip which is Kongma La pass or we can take a trail directly to Lobuche. The top of the pass is marked by cairns and Buddhist prayer flags. The final descent from the pass is the most difficult part of today’s journey. After climbing the moraine on the far side, the trail turns north through Khumbu Glacier which takes us to Lobuche. Overnight at Lobuche.
  • Day 09Lobuche to Gorak Shep (5170m), trek to Everest Base Camp (5364m) back to GorakshepIn the first section of trek we will start from Lobuche following the narrow space between the moraine of the glacier and the wall, then cross the tributary mountain glaciers to reach the dry lake bed known as Gorakshep. You will stop for lunch at the Gorakshep, then walk to the base camp of Everest and explore the area famous for the many climbing expeditions up to the Mount Everest. The Base Camp area provides an opportunity to experience the energy of the brave climbers of this famous mountain. After exploring the Everest Base Camp, we will be trek back to Gorakshep. Overnight stay at a guesthouse.
  • Day 10 Gorakshep to Dzongla (4850m) (Trekking: approx 8 hours) Early in the morning trek to Kala Patar (5545m) to experience sensational sunrise views from this amazing vantage point. From the lodge the ascent is quite steep, so start very slowly and try to ascend at a steady rhythmic pace. Kala Patar is the rocky hilltop below Pumori. It is a tough walk because of the altitude, but the view from the top surpasses the wildest imagination. Returning back to lodge and having breakfast we set off to Lobuche, where we stop for lunch. We then follow the Lobuche Khola downstream where, after a while, we take a trail to the right heading off towards Dzongla.
  • Day 11Dzongla to Gokyo (4800m) via Cho La pass (5368m) As we gain height, the Cho La Lake begins to appear and the Ama Dablam presides over a range of mountains on the south and Cholatse soars on the west. Climbing the incline is not easy; it is steep, but made worse by boulders over some of which we will have to scramble. The final climb to the Cho La can be a little tricky as the trail curves round a crevasse. The top of the pass is marked by prayer flags and cairns. Scenery of majestic peaks on all directions is breathtaking. Although long, the path leading down to Thangnak is not difficult. Our trail brings us to the edge of the Ngozumpa glacier, which is the longest glacier in Nepal. Reaching the other side of the glacier, we see the second Gokyo Lake on the series of six lakes. A short distance away is the third Gokyo Lake. On the edge of this lake stands the Gokyo Village where we spend the night.
  • Day 12Rest day in Gokyo or Climb Gokyo Ri (5357m)We climb Gokyo Ri today and enjoy views of the incredible mountain vista. We can also tour the fourth Gokyo Lake today which is only 3km north of the Gokyo Village. Next, continue trekking to the 5th lake. The view from ‘Scoundrel's Viewpoint’, located at the edge of the 5th lake, is astonishing. Cho-Oyu, Gyachung Kang, Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Makulu mountains and the huge Ngozumba Glacier are ours to admire. We trek back to Gokyo and spend the night.
  • Day 13 Gokyo to Lumden village (4650m) via Renjo La Pass (5360m) We have an early start as we have a long day ahead of us. The trail skirts around north of Gokyo Lake and then climbs up though scree slope as we reach a highland pasture. Looking back, we enjoy excellent views of Gokyo and the mountains in the background. We continue to climb on scree and also boulder hop towards Renjo Pass (5420m). We finally reach the top of the pass, which is marked by prayer flags, from where we can have a look into Nangpa Valleyand, looking back, we have views of Everest and Makalu. From the pass descending is tricky as we have to walk on scree and loose rocks (ropes are fixed in icy conditions to facilitate the descent). After a while we reach a glacial lake from where the valley opens up. We continue to head down the valley through open pastures for sometime before bearing right to reach the small settlement of Arya.over night Lumden valley in Lodge.
  • Day 14 Lumden Village to Namche Bazaar The descent from lumden village to Marulung then Thame follows a traditional route used for centuries by the Tibetan traders. We cross the Bhote Koshi River and descend to Taranga. The trail continues to descend and we cross two bridges before reaching Thame. Overlooking Thame is its famous Gompa situated on a hill to the west. From here, we descend gradually on a trail that passes through a few small villages before reaching Namche Bazaar which is probably the biggest town in the Everest region. Overnight in Namche Bazaar.
  • Day 15Namche Bazaar to Lukla (2850 m) Today, the trail descends steeply down before crossing the suspension bridges over the Dudh Koshi river. From here, the trail becomes more flat. We pass forests of Rhododendron and Pine trees along with the view of the snow peaks in the distance before reaching Phakding. After taking lunch you will be continuing the trek to Lukla. The last night with this crew trek will be memorable. Overnight stay at a guesthouse.
  • Day 16Lukla to Kathmandu by air (1360m)On the last day you will be thanking the porters, who were a crucial part of the trek. From Lukla, we will take one-hour flight back to Kathmandu. If the flight is on schedule, it is likely to be back at the hotel before noon and you can have a good shower and rest in the afternoon. We'll have a celebratory dinner in Kathmandu.
